Today August 1 (Thursday) has begun, the most tragic month of the Bengali nation. In the month of August, 1975 the nation lost the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
August 15 of 1975 is the most hated and cruel night filled with pains and sorrows in the history of mankind. On that black night the killers not only killed Bangabandhu but they killed the wife of Bangabandhu, Faziltunnessa Mujib , eldest son Freedom Fighter captain Sheikh Kamal, second son Freedom Fighter Lieutenant Sheikh Zamal, youngest son Sheikh Russel, newly married daughter in laws Sultana Kamal, Rozy Zamal, only brother of Bangabandhu, Sheikh Naser, maternal nephew Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni and his pregnant wife Arzoo Moni, brother- in- law Abdur Rob Serniabat, youngest son Arif Serniabat, youngest daughter Baby Serniabat, grand son Sukanta Abdullah, nephew Shahid Serniabat, Abdul Naim Khan Rintu, Bangabandhu’s chief security officer Colonel Zamiluddin and a number of on duty officers and employees.
The whole country was plunged into darkness of grief after the killing of Bangabandhu. The patch of grief also spread in the International arena.
West German Nobel Laureate Willy Brandt said that, ‘The Bengali nation cannot be trusted after they killed Sheikh Mujib. They can do any hateful work.’
Noted litterateur Nirod C Chowdhury terming the Bangalees as ‘traitor’said that, ‘The Bangalees have exposed their suicidal character as they killed the dreamer of Independent Bangladesh.’
The Times of London in its August 16, 1975 edition commented that, ‘Despite everything Bangabandhu will be remembered all the time. Because in reality Bangladesh has no existence without him.’
In the edition of the same date The Daily Telegraph said that millions of people will consider the death of Sheikh Mujib as an irreparable loss.
Not only that, on August 21 of 2004 there was an attempt to kill Bangabandhu’s daughter, Awami League president and present Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by grenade attack. Luckily though she escaped death, but former President Zillur Rahman’s wife then secretary of Mahilla Awami League Ivy Rahman could not escape death along with 24 more and injuring about 500 leaders and workers.
Explaining the significance of the mournful month of August, Organizing secretary of Awami League B.M. Mojammel Haque told bartatwentyfour.com that,’The great leader of the Bangalees, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib is immortal and imperishable. He is mixed with the very existence of the Bangalees. The air, water and every inch of Bangladesh is imbued with Mujib ideals. The immortal and imperishable spirit of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will be transmitted from generation to generation. Awami League will go ahead under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina to materialize the cherished dream of the Father of the Nation.’
When the month of August comes, the Bangalees weep. With the unforgettable pain the heart losing the Father the Awami League activists observe month long programs. The Nation as a whole forgetting all differences and distance observe National Mourning in this month through holding various programs.’
