Nuruzzaman Biswas gets AL nomination in Pabna-4 by-election

Bangladesh Awami League (AL) nominated Md Nuruzzaman Biswas as the party candidate to contest the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Pabna-4 by-election slated for September 26.

The nomination was finalized at a meeting of the AL Parliamentary Board (ALPB) held at Ganabhaban, the official residence of the prime minister, here on Sunday afternoon.

AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting, while other members of the board were present.

The Pabna-4 (Atgharia-Ishwardi) JS seat fell vacant following the death of AL lawmaker Shamsur Rahman Sherif Dilu on last April 2. The Election Commission (EC) announced the by-polls schedule at Nirbachan Bhaban on August 23.

According to the EC schedule, the last date for collection of nomination form is September 2, while nomination papers will be scrutinized on September 3.

The last date for withdrawal of nomination papers is September 8. The EC said ballot papers will be used in taking vote in the by-polls.

Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu had been elected Member of Parliament for the Pabna-4 constituency for five consecutive terms since 1996. Six members of Dilu,s family collected party nomination forms to contest the by-election in this constituency which was vacated on his death.

Dilu’s wife and Ishwardi Upazila Women’s Awami League president Kamrun Nahar Sharif, eldest son Ishwardi Upazila Awami League member Galibur Rahman Sharif, eldest daughter district Awami League women’s affairs secretary Mahjebin Shirin, Shirin’s husband Ishwardi Municipal Awami League president and Ishwardi municipality mayor Abul took nomination forms. Kalam Azad, Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu’s cousin and district Awami League joint Secretary Bashir Ahmed and brother-in-law and ward Awami League leader Habibur Rahman. A total of 28 people, including six relatives of Dilu’s family, collected party nomination forms for the seat. Nuruzzaman Biswas is the Vice-President of Pabna district Awami League.
