Jatiya Party Chairman Golam Mohammad (GM) Quader and General Secretary Mujibul Haque Chunnu have been accused of arbitrariness and 671 leaders and activists have announced their resignation from the party.
Shafiqul Islam Sentu, the recently expelled convener of Dhaka Metropolitan North, announced his resignation at a press conference at the National Press Club on Thursday (January 25) afternoon.
JP Vice Chairman Md. Jahangir Alam Pathan said, today we appear before you with a heavy heart. You are surely aware of the situation of Jatiya Party regarding the election of the 12th National Parliament. Jatiya Party, who is currently in the post of chairman-that GM has been saying since a year ago that Jatiya Party will contest the election alone. As such he has been speaking in speech statements and in the media.
He said, we also became confident in him. But before the election, we realized that he is secretly trying to protect his own interests by colluding with the government. In the end, after nominating candidates from 300 seats, the chairman and general secretary of the party sold the entire party in exchange for concessions from Awami League in only 26 seats. As a result, the Jatiya Party has suffered an extreme defeat in the 12th Jatiya Sangsad(JS). And only 11 candidates including chairman and secretary general have become MPs in the election.
He also said that in this situation, the dedicated leaders and activists of the Jatiya Party protested against the failure of the chairman and the secretary General. From the grassroots level of the party, the resignation of the chairman and secretary general was demanded to take the party to the brink of destruction.
Shafiqul Islam Sentu, the recently expelled convener of JP’s Dhaka Metropolitan North, said at the press conference that JP's chairman and secretary general consider it his party. They think of it as a grocery store. They come to the office in the morning, return in the evening. They eat and drink here.
It was also informed at the press conference that this resignation will continue.
During the press conference, JP central committee member Shaheen and Sultana Rima, expelled presidium member Sunil Shubo Roy, expelled vice chairman Yahia Chowdhury and hundreds of activists were present.
