BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called for stepping away from the incitement to disrupt the freedom of the press.

He said this as the chief guest at the launching of writer Joynal Abedin's book 'Tarik Rahman: Politics and Policies Contemporary Bangladesh' at Banani Hotel Lakeshore on Tuesday (November 26) afternoon.

He said that a few incitementists and provocateurs are trying to disrupt and destroy the freedom of the press in various ways. This should not be accepted by any conscious person or patriotic person. I request you to please step away from this terrible act of suicide. Please cooperate in institutionalizing democracy.

Unfortunately, a terrible act has begun today, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, an attack on the press, an attack on the free expression of opinion for which we have always struggled and fought. Begum Khaleda Zia was the first to completely free the press after coming to power in 2001.

Referring to the editor of Banik Barta, the BNP Secretary General said, he was telling me, why don't you say this? The freedom of the press was maximum ensured during Khaleda Zia's time, during BNP's time, this is the reality.

He said, today we have to come out of the work that our young students are doing. This is an interim government, it is not possible for them to do everything at once. We have to be patient so that we can make minimum reforms which Tarique Rahman Saheb also said yesterday that we have to make reforms. We are not against reforms; we want to go to the elections with reforms.
