Thought you would grant me leave: Hasina

Newly elected Awami League President Sheikh Hasina has she thought the party leaders and activists would grant her leave and relieve her of party responsibilities.

After being re-elected as the party chief on Saturday (Dec 21), she told the party men, “I was with Awami League even when I was not holding any post. I am with the party and will be. I thought you would grant me leave.”

Hasina, the incumbent prime minister, was unanimously re-elected president of the ruling party for the next three years at the second session of its 21st council held at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the capital.

She said the Awami League has been her strengthen since she lost most of her family members on August 15 in 1975.

Referring to her age of 73 years, Hasina said, “You have to think of new leaders. You have to elect new leaders in future… We’ll move forward with our leaders and activists.”

Obaidul Quader was re-elected general secretary of the party for the next term at the second session of the two-day Awami League council.
