Electricity consumption at 100% achieved, success in literacy rate as well

In 2010 and 2016, the percentage of households covered by electricity was 55.3 and 75.9 percent respectively. Currently, this rate has increased by 23.42 percent to 99.34 percent. Along with that, the literacy rate has increased by 8.4 percent. The literacy rate is now 74 percent in five years.

This information was informed in the final report of the 'Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2022' of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) on Wednesday (December 27) at the Auditorium of Statistics Building in Agargaon of the capital.

According to BBS, currently 99.34 percent of the country's food banks are covered where 99.14 percent of households in rural areas and 99.78 percent of households in urban areas are getting electricity. Currently, the literacy rate among the seven-year-old and above population is 74 percent which in 2010 and 2016 was 57.9 and 65.6 percent respectively.

The report also informed that according to the data of the 2022 survey, the monthly average income of Khana is 32 thousand 422 taka which in 2010 and 2016 survey was 11 thousand 479 taka and 15 thousand 988 taka respectively. Besides, according to HIES 2022, the monthly income of each household has also increased as compared to last time. Currently, the monthly cost of a meal is Tk. 31 thousand 500 which in 2010 and 2016 was Tk. 11 thousand 200 and Tk. 15 thousand 715 respectively. A family saves like Tk. 1 thousand per month.

Planning Minister MA Mannan was present as the chief guest at the release of the report. The special guest was the chairman of BRAC Hossain Zillur Rahman, Secretary of Statistics and Information Management Division Dr. Shahnaz Arefin NDC, Member of General Economics Division Dr. Md. Kausar Ahmed.

BBS Director General Mohammad Mizanur Rahman presided over the program and Project Director Mohiuddin Ahmed MPH presented the keynote report.

In addition, the rate of use of improved toilets in Khana has increased to 92.3 percent and the percentage of improved potable water in Khana has increased to 96.1 percent.
