Electricity prices are not being increased, they are being adjusted. Selling at a price lower than the cost of production incurs a loss. State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid MP commented that some adjustments are being made for that reason.

He said that the price of electricity at the consumer level will increase from 34 paisa to a maximum rate of 70 paisa. The new electricity rates in the gazette will be effective from February.

State Minister Nasrul Hamid said this while talking to reporters in his room at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Thursday (February 29).

He said, now the average production cost of electricity is Tk. 12 and it is being sold at Tk. 7. Tk. 43 thousand crore subsidy should be paid in electricity this year. Adjustments will be made gradually over several years. Electricity prices for low-usage customers will increase less and higher on the upside.

The State Minister said that the biggest problem has been due to the increase in the price of the dollar. Although the international market price of oil-gas and coal remains the same, it is costing Tk. 40 per dollar more than before. This is where the huge gap is created. We are working to coordinate with the dollar.

He said, fuel oil prices are going to modern pricing. The index and formula are adjusted monthly with the international market. Neighboring countries coordinate daily. If Sethan gets excessive, the government helps in other ways.

Regarding the increase in the price of gas, the State Minister said that the average price is falling above Tk. 24. Fertilizer is being given at the rate of Tk. 16, electricity at Tk. 14. The prices will be adjusted within the next 3 years.

He said, we want to raise the cost. The price will increase by a very small amount. Life Line customers (users up to 75 units) may have monthly bills as high as Tk. 20. Now if customers are a little more frugal, the bill will remain the same. Our aim is to encourage consumers to be frugal.
