Security Council passes resolution to send humanitarian aid to Gaza
The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution on the entry of humanitarian aid into the Palestinian war-torn besieged Gaza Strip.
On Friday (December 22), Al Jazeera reported this information.
13 out of 15 Security Council countries voted in favor of the resolution. No one voted against the motion. However, the United States and Russia abstained from voting. As a result, the proposal was passed by a vote of 13-0.
Al Jazeera reports that the Middle Eastern country, the United Arab Emirates, raised the first proposal last Friday. The draft calls for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid to Gaza. But due to the opposition of the United States, the cease-fire was completely dropped. Instead, only humanitarian aid is mentioned.
Russia, one of the permanent members of the Security Council, said the resolution was "toothless" and "incompetent".
The resolution was passed after a week of stalling, but it did not call for a cessation of hostilities. As a result, the resolution is unlikely to stop Israel's brutal attacks on Gaza.
In this regard, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, Vasily Nibanzia, said that the proposal did not mention a ceasefire. Instead, it allowed Israel to continue its military operations with a 'free hand'.
In a BBC report, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern about the arrival of humanitarian aid. He said Israel's military operation in Gaza would act as an obstacle to the delivery of aid.
The draft resolution states: Unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to ordinary Palestinians. All available means of relief should be utilized. There is a call to appoint an official to the head of the United Nations who will look after the distribution of relief.
There are also demands for the release of hostages and for sufficient fuel to flow into Gaza to meet humanitarian aid.
According to Al Jazeera's report, the number of people killed in Israel's aggression in Gaza, which has been going on for two and a half months, has exceeded 20,000. There are more than 14,000 women and children among these dead Palestinians.
