Imran Khan gets bail in 12 cases before announcement of results

Imprisoned Imran Khan could not contest this election. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was also not allowed to contest elections as a party. Still, PTI-backed independent candidates are ahead in Pakistan's general elections. In such a situation, former Prime Minister Imran Khan got bail in 12 cases including the attack on military installations.

Islamabad ATC judge Malik Ijaz Asif gave this verdict after a hearing on Saturday (February 10). Along with Imran Khan, senior leader of his party Pakistan Tehreek-e Insaaf (PTI) Shah Mehmood Qureshi has also been granted bail in 12 cases.

The cases in which Imran Khan got bail were against Imran Khan and PTI leaders for allegedly carrying out attacks on several Pakistani army bases on May 9 last year. Paramilitary Rangers arrested Imran Khan from Islamabad. Around 20 military bases including the army headquarters in Rawalpindi were attacked and vandalized around this incident. Shadman Police Station, home of the corps commander in Lahore, was also attacked. Hundreds of PTI worker-supporters were arrested. Imran was accused in that case.

According to the report of the Indian media ‘India Today’, last Thursday was the election of Pakistan. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan could not participate in this year's elections due to his imprisonment. Imran's party Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf was also revoked by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Activists-supporters of Imran's party contested as independent candidates under the Brinjal symbol. Counting of votes started on Saturday. The final result has not been released yet. However, PTI-backed candidates are leading in the preliminary count. Nawaz Sharif's party is ahead as the single largest party.

Meanwhile, the jailed Imran Khan got a big relief before the election results were announced. He got bail in 12 cases related to the attack on the army base.

In August last year, Imran Khan was sentenced to three years in prison in the Toshakhana case. Later, the Islamabad High Court stayed his sentence and he was arrested in another case of leaking state secrets which is known as the cipher case. He has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in this case.
