The rebels have captured the Junta's base on the Thai border
The Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA), a rebel group fighting against Myanmar's Junta government, and its allies have seized a Junta office and police station in the town of Mayawati near the Thai border.
Meanwhile, the Junta's Infantry Battalion 355 fell in Mayawati town's Thinganinaung area on Saturday (March 9).
The KNLA, the military wing of the Karen National Union, and their allies launched an attack on Thinganinaung last Thursday morning. By Saturday, the base and police station of the Junta forces fell.
Bangkok-based Myanmar news agency Irrabaty reported that Thinganinaung is located between the border towns of Mayawati and Kawkareik on the important Asia Highway leading to Thailand.
After the fall of the base here, KNLA launched an attack on the neighboring base 356 and 357. On the other hand, the Junta is using airstrikes and shelling to stop the KNLA.
A KNLA resistance fighter said, 'We are fighting to take control of base 356. Most of the soldiers there have fled. Few troops are stationed there. The soldiers of base 355 and 356 have joined base 357 to prevent the attack.
The Junta forces carried out more than 100 bomb attacks in the three-day fighting. 60 houses were destroyed in this attack.
A local resident said that most of the people there fled after the bomb attack last Friday. About 60 people are staying there to protect their belongings. About 7 thousand people live in Thinganinaung. Most of them fled to Mayawati city or nearby villages.
Two people were killed and eight injured in Nai Nuang village in a Junta airstrike last Friday. Five members of the rebel group died last Saturday. However, the number of casualties of the Junta army is not known.
According to the Myanmar human rights organization Assistance Association for Political Prisoners 4654 people have been killed by the Junta's attacks in the country so far. 26228 people were arrested by them.
