The way CIA conducted covert operations against the Xi Jinping government!
It has been two years since Donald Trump became the President of the United States. At that time, he authorized the CIA to launch a covert operation against Xi Jinping's government.
According to the news agency Reuters about three former US officials, the aim of the campaign was to build public opinion against the country's government on Chinese social media. No one knew about the 'top secret' operation that began in 2019.
Three former US officials told Reuters that the CIA formed a small team for the covert operation at the behest of former President Trump. The members of that group started to carry out negative propaganda against Chinese President Xi Jinping and his government through fake identities online. In addition, the defamatory intelligence information about China started leaking to the media of different countries.
China has rapidly increased its global presence over the past decade. Military agreements, especially with developing countries, have increased trade agreements. Through this, China emerged in the world as a counter party to the Western world including the United States. Western countries are trying in various ways to deal with China's growing influence.
Sources said CIA spies involved in the covert operation campaigned against leaders of China's ruling Communist Party for stashing money abroad and calling the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) a project riddled with corruption. The CIA was spreading propaganda that the Chinese government was wasting money through this project. Through this project, China is financing hundreds of billions of dollars in infrastructure projects in developing countries.
However, US officials declined to give details about the operation. However, they said that CIA spies spread discreditable intelligence information of the Chinese government under false identities.
Two former US officials said the disinformation was aimed at spreading confusion among top Chinese Communist Party leaders. So that the Xi Jinping government is forced to spend more money to strictly control the Internet.
"We wanted them (the Chinese government and the Communist Party) to be desperate to find something that actually doesn't exist," a US official told Reuters.
CIA spokeswoman Chelsea Robinson declined to comment.
In this regard, a spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China said that the news of this operation of the CIA proved that the US government uses social media and media as a "tool" to shape public opinion to spread false information and try to divert international attitudes to different sectors.
The sources also said that China has been making secretive efforts for years to expand it globally. The US started the operation with the CIA as a countermeasure to such activities of Beijing.
During his presidency, Trump took a tougher stance against China than his predecessors. Basically he was a part of the CIA's campaign against China. The CIA operation brought back memories of the Cold War. In the last century, the United States had a long Cold War with the former Soviet Union. The United States was then struggling to deal with the growing global influence of the Soviet Union. Tim Weiner has written a book about such battles in politics. "The battle of nerves is back again," he told Reuters.
Reuters could not verify whether Biden continued this campaign against China after coming to power.
Kate Waters, a spokeswoman for the Biden administration's National Security Council, declined to comment on the existence of the operation or whether it is still ongoing.
Reuters spoke to two people who work on intelligence history about the CIA operation. They said any such covert operation ordered by the White House to the CIA usually continues even after a new president comes in.
Trump is again going to fight for the presidency of the Republican Party. He has signaled that he will take tougher measures against China if he is re-elected US president.
