Imran Khan acquitted from illegal marriage case

Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan and his third wife Bushra Bibi have been acquitted by a court in the country of illegal marriage. On Saturday (July 13), the District and Sessions Judge Court of Islamabad gave the verdict.

The court convicted the former prime minister of the country last February, alleging that there was a violation of the Islamic marriage law by marrying Bushra Bibi to Imran Khan without observing the Iddat after separating from her previous husband. Later that time the court sentenced the couple to seven years imprisonment. They appealed against the court's verdict.

According to a report by the British news agency Reuters, the court accepted the appeal filed against the sentence of Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the Iddat case and ordered their immediate release.

Reuters says they have been ordered to be released immediately unless they are required to be detained in another case. The trial stated that the charges filed against the couple failed to prove. As a result, there is no case left to keep PTI founder and former cricket star Imran Khan in jail.

Imran Khan's PTI said that after the arrest of the PTI founder in May last year, PTI activists carried out violent attacks on the military and other state institutions. Fresh arrest warrants were issued against Imran Khan on Saturday in three other cases related to the violent incident.

An anti-terrorism court in Islamabad canceled bail last week in a case filed against Imran Khan and thousands of his supporters in connection with the May 9 violence last year. However, PTI alleged that this order of cancellation of bail was given to prolong Imran Khan's imprisonment in jail.
