Kerala landslides death toll rises to 123
The death toll has risen to 123 in three landslides in Wayanad, India's southern state of Kerala. Many are still missing.
Heavy rains triggered three landslides in a span of four hours in Kerala's Wayanad in the early hours of Tuesday (July 30). Many people were killed in this landslide in Meppadi, Mundakal Town and Churalmala in Waynar district. Besides, hundreds of people were trapped.
Immediately after the accident, all government agencies started rescue operations. Firefighters and members of the National Disaster Response Force were deployed at the scene. Joined by Air Force helicopters and more than 200 army personnel.
Many families were quickly evacuated from the scene to safe places. Many people have been rescued and are being treated at the hospital. Wenard district is cut off from other districts by road due to the collapse of a bridge. The rescue work has to gain momentum.
The District Disaster Management Committee has issued a red alert due to landslides in various parts of Wenara. A 'National Health Mission Control Room' was opened to deal with landslides and other rain-related disasters.
In this incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured all kinds of assistance to the Chief Minister of Kerala. The Prime Minister's Office has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured.
Leader of Opposition in India's Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi won from Waynard seat in the last Lok Sabha elections. Later he gave up the seat. After the landslide incident, Rahul Gandhi said that he had spoken to the Kerala Chief Minister about coordination with all departments.
