The Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) has expressed concern over the harassment of Rozina Islam, a senior journalist of the daily Prothom Alo, and the case against her while she was performing her professional duties in the Secretariat. At the same time, the organization has demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Rozina Islam.

The demand was made in a statement sent by NOAB's president AK Azad and vice-president Shahidullah Khan Badal on Wednesday (May 19).

The statement said NOAB expressed concern over the harassment of Rozina Islam inside the Health Ministry for about six hours while she was performing her professional duties, handing her over to the police, filing a case against her under the Colonial-era Official Secrecy Act and sending her to jail.

The statement called for the immediate and unconditional release of Rozina Islam. Harassing such a professional journalist physically and mentally inside the Secretariat, the center point of country’s administration, for about six hours is unimaginable and uncivilized. NOAB strongly condemned such an incident.

The statement further said that NOAB publishes newspapers through investment and hard work in collaboration with working journalists. This incident with Rozina Islam will hinder honest journalism and will be another bad example. NOAB is demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Rozina Islam and is urging the appropriate authorities to identify those who harassed her in the Secretariat.

It may be mentioned that on Monday (May 17) afternoon, Rozina Islam went to the Ministry of Health to perform her professional duties. She was detained for about six hours for allegedly removing documents from a file in the Health Secretary's private secretary's room. And her mobile phone was confiscated. Rozina also accused herself of torture. At one point she fell ill there. She was later handed over to Shahbagh police.

On the same night, a case was filed against Rozina Islam at Shahbagh Police Station under the Theft and Official Secrets Act. Rozina was taken to the court in the next morning when police sought remand for five days. On the other hand, her lawyer wanted bail. The court denied bail and remand and ordered her to be sent to jail.
