Mayor Atiqul calls on all to be vocal against mischief
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam called on all to be vocal against illegal occupation, pollution and mischief with aim of building healthy, dynamic and modern Dhaka city.
He was speaking at the Rotary District Conference-2021 organized by Rotary Club, Sonargaon Dhaka at Radisson Blue Dhaka Water Garden in the capital on Saturday (June 26) evening.
At the time, the DNCC mayor said, Rotary International has been working in humanitarian service since its inception. Its role in eradicating polio worldwide is highly commendable.
Atiqul Islam said that even in the early days of the Corona pandemic, when one was afraid to go to the people affected by the Corona, he relied on the great Creator and delivered food to the helpless people without fear. During the Corona period, food has been delivered to 76,000 helpless families through "Sabai Mile Sabar Dhaka" and this activity is still going on. As a result of the tireless work of the members of the voluntary organization BD Clean, it has been possible to pack and distribute these food items.
He thanked everyone involved in "Everyone's Dhaka" and "BD Clean" for this.
Md. Atiqul Islam said a 1,080,560-square-foot DNCC shopping mall on 7.7 acres of land in the capital's Mohakhali has been converted into the country's largest "DNCC Dedicated Covid-19 Hospital" with 1,000 beds to provide health services to city dwellers. This building was built for the market. More than two and a half hundred shops were also allotted here. That allocation has been canceled through a board meeting. Although the DNCC has the potential to earn around Taka 100 crore a year, the market has been converted into a hospital to stand by people in time of crisis.
The DNCC mayor said the hospital would provide Medicare to patients infected with the corona virus during the pandemic. Once the pandemic is over, it will be operated as the General Hospital of Dhaka North City Corporation, where all kinds of medical services will be provided.
Atiqul Islam said Dhaka North City Corporation is working on short, medium and long term plans to reduce water logging and control pollution in the city. The DNCC has already started canal recovery and cleaning activities in various places, which will continue with the help of the people. The boundaries of the two banks of each canal will be demarcated and proper maintenance will be taken. He called on Rotarians to come forward to recover and maintain the canals.
The DNCC mayor handed over 100,000 masks to Rotary International on his behalf for distribution among the general public.
At the time, the mayor said, everyone should wear a mask to protect their family, city and country, and follow health guidelines, including government guidelines.
He further said that in order to free Dhaka from the clutches of occupation, pollution and evil people and build it as a healthy, beautiful and modern city livable for all, everyone has to work for the welfare of the people from their respective positions.
Rotary International presented the Rotary Spirit of Service Award to Mohammad Atiqul Islam, Mayor of DNCC, Tawfiq Zahidur Rahman, a dreamer of "Dhaka for All" and BD Clean, a voluntary organization.
