About 20,000 women in the country are getting breast cancer every year. However, if detected early, women can get rid of the disease easily and 50 percent of the affected women can recover.

Specialist doctors said this at a function in the capital on the occasion of World Breast Cancer Day on Saturday. On this occasion, a procession called 'Walk for Pink' was taken out in Hatirjheel. About three and a half hundred volunteers took part in the procession.

The rally was held for the first time under the Fourth Public Health and Nutrition Sector Program (HPNSP) of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

According to the ‘Walk for Pink’ rally, many people think that only women are affected by breast cancer. Both men and women can be affected. One in eight women in the world is at risk of developing breast cancer. In Bangladesh, 98% of breast cancer patients are women.

Experts at the rally also said that giving birth to the first child at an older age, not breastfeeding the child and taking extra birth control pills can lead to breast cancer. However, if it is identified at the beginning, it is possible to recover from this disease easily.

Walk for Pink coordinator Dr. Umm Humaira Kaneta said that in the last two years, they have been working to raise awareness about breast cancer and cervical cancer through various activities online and offline.

She said that many people get scared when they hear about cancer. But most people do not know it is preventable. The number of patients is increasing due to lack of accurate information. There is a lot of discussion about who has the highest risk of breast cancer, what are the early symptoms and how women who are at risk can easily avoid the risk through regular health check-ups.
