About two thousand journalists died in Corona
Coronavirus has killed nearly 2,000 journalists in 94 countries around the world. Brazil has the highest number of journalists killed in South America. The Geneva-based organization Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) reported this information last Friday. The PEC has compiled the list on the basis of information provided by the media of the country concerned, the National Association of Journalists and the PEC's regional representatives.
The PEC has been accounting for the deaths of journalists from Corona since March 1, 2020, a statement said. According to them, 1,940 journalists have died in Corona till December 2021. Of these, about 955 are in South America. The list of dead journalists includes 556 in Asia, 263 in Europe, 98 in Africa and 68 in North America.
The PEC says there are 50 more dead outside the list. It is unknown at this time whether they died in Corona or not. The leaders of the organization believe that the number of journalists killed in Corona must be even higher. This is because the cause of death of journalists is sometimes not specified or the cause of their death is not announced (on a large scale). In some countries, no reliable data is available.
PEC Secretary-General Blaise Lampen said the number of deaths of journalists in Corona in the first half of 2021 had dropped in the second half of the year after the vaccination. They recorded the deaths of 225 journalists in Corona in the second half of 2021. Of these, 25 died in December, 28 in November, 27 in October, 33 in September, 42 in August and 70 in July. But in the first half of 2021, 1,165 journalists died from Corona.
