EC formation bill will be placed today in JS
Dhaka: The session of Parliament will end on Thursday (today) as the current session has been shortened due to the rise of coronavirus infection. As a result, the Election Commission (EC) formation bill will be placed in Jatiyo Sangsad(JS) today to get passed.
According to JS Secretariat sources, Law Minister Anisul Haque will place the proposal to pass the bill in JS today.
The Law Minister placed the 'Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioner Appointment Bill-2022' in JS last Sunday. The bill was later examined and sent to a Parliamentary Standing Committee for a report to JS within seven days.
Yesterday, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs recommended two changes in the eligibility and disqualification of the Chief Election Commissioner and the Election Commissioner. Shahiduzzaman Sarkar, chairman of the Parliamentary Committee, presented the report.
As per the rules, now the Law Minister will propose the bill in the JS for passing any day. The MPs will then send it to the Public Opinion Solicitation and Selection Committee and propose amendments. Then the bill will be discussed in the JS.
If the JS wants, the draft law will be passed with the recommendation of the parliamentary committee or as decided in the parliament. Usually the recommendations of the parliamentary committee are accepted in the parliament.
If passed in the parliament, Bangladesh will get the law for the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioner for the first time.
