Deputy Attorney General Imran breaches discipline: Law Minister
Law Minister Anisul Haque said that Deputy Attorney General Emran Ahmad Bhuiyan, who did not sign the statement against Nobel Peace Prize winning economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has breached discipline by talking to the media.
The Law Minister said, he is a Deputy Attorney General. If he speaks to the press, he should speak after resigning from his post or could speak with the permission of the Attorney General. He has broken the discipline.
The Law Minister said this in response to a question from journalists while leaving a discussion meeting organized by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) on the proposed cyber security law at the National Press Club in the capital on Tuesday (September 5).
Before this, Deputy Attorney General Emran Ahmed Bhuiyan said at the Supreme Court premises on Monday afternoon that more than 160 Nobel laureates and former US presidents and former secretaries of state, have issued statements on of noble laureate Prof. Dr, Md. Yunus’ behalf that he is being subjected to judicial harassment. A statement from the Attorney General's office is expected to protest against that. Notice has been given to all employees of the Attorney General's Office to sign the statement. I have decided not to sign that statement.
He also said that with the 160 prominent people I agree with the statement given for Dr. Muhammad Yunus. I think Dr. Yunus is an honorable man. He is being defamed and it is judicial harassment.
In last August, 175 world leaders sent an open letter to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to suspend the ongoing judicial proceedings against Dr. Muhammad Yunus in the Labor Court and to make the upcoming parliamentary elections in Bangladesh fair and participatory. The letter said, "We are concerned about the recent targeting of him (Dr. Yunus) and believe that this is a continuing process of judicial harassment against him."
