How the gas pump explosion happened in Sylhet?
A fire occurred when a bulb in the compressor room exploded while giving gas to a vehicle at the ‘Birati’ filling station in Mirabazar, Sylhet city. At least 9 people including pedestrians received burn injury.
The incident happened on Tuesday (September 5) around 7:30 pm. On receiving information, two units of Fire Service rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.
Sylhet Kotwali Model Police Station OC Mohammad Ali Mahmud confirmed the truth of the incident.
The injured in this incident are Ripon (34), Lutfur (32), Rumel (28), Minhaj (27), Badal Das (42), Ramimal (18), Ruman (23), Tarek (30) and Muhin (45). The injured are said to be undergoing treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Hospital.
According to local sources, there was a sudden loud explosion at the ‘Birati’ filling station in Mirabazar. Soon after this, the pump caught fire.
Locals immediately started extinguishing the fire and informed the fire service. Later, the fire service people came and started working to control the fire.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (North) Azbahar Ali Sheikh said, "We immediately went and rescued the injured and sent them to the hospital. Initially, we think that the explosion was caused by a gas valve. However, Jalalabad Gas Authority has been informed. They can test and tell what happened.
Meanwhile, Sylhet City Corporation's newly elected Mayor Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury, Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ilyas Sharif and other emergency officials rushed to the spot after receiving the news of the explosion.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ilias Sharif told the media at the scene, "There was an explosion here around 7 pm. Initially it seems that one of the compressor valves was a little loose. This can cause an explosion due to the increase in gas pressure. Fire service and police teams are working, the details will be known after investigation.
In this regard, Sylhet Fire Service Senior Station Officer Md. Belal Hossain said, 'There was a deficiency in the safety system of the pump. Initially, it appears that the explosion may have been due to the weakness of the gas valve.
