Shaheed Noor Hussain Day today
Today, November 10 is Shaheed Noor Hussain Day an unforgettable day in the struggle for the restoration of democracy in Bangladesh. On this day in 1987, the streets of Dhaka were stained with Noor Hossain's blood. The day was a fiery day of agitation by angry masses against the military dictator H.M. Ershad. This self-sacrifice of Noor Hossain accelerated the movement of democracy-loving people against the then dictatorship.
The President gave a message on the occasion of the day. President Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In the speech, the President said that many people, including martyr Nur Hossain, have given fresh blood in the movement to restore democracy. Everyone has to work unitedly to continue the progress of this democracy that they got in exchange for their sacrifices.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, in the anti-dictatorship movement, Nur Hossain joined the march of the 15-party alliance led by Awami League on this day in 1987, writing slogans on his chest and back, Ganatantra Mukti Pak, Shairachar Nipat Jak ('Democracy should be liberated, tyranny should die'.)
Various political and social organizations have taken detailed programs on the occasion of Noor Hussain Day. On behalf of Awami League, on Friday (November 10) at 9 am at Shaheed Noor Hossain Square in the capital, a prayer will be held to pay tribute and pray for the forgiveness of his departed soul.
On November 10, 1987, 15 parties, 7 parties and 5 parties held sit-in strike programs in front of the secretariats. With the support of student organizations associated with that program, the sit-in strike turned into a siege program. Ignoring all the obstacles of the dictator, a procession of agitating students gathered around the secretariat from the morning of 10 November. Then the brave procession of Noor Hussains started crossing the police box at the mouth of Topkhana Road. On his bare chest and back was written 'Ganatantra Muktipak-Soirachar Nipat Jak'.
As soon as the rally started, the police started lathi charge and tear gas. Paltan became a battlefield. In the meantime, the news came that Nur Hossain was martyred in police firing. Many were injured.
A new struggle for democracy started on that day with Nur Hossain's self-sacrifice. In the course of that struggle, on December 4, 1990, the dictator Ershad announced his resignation.
