December 6: Lalmonirhat Liberation Day

Today, December 6 is Lalmonirhat Liberation Day. On this day in 1971, after the death struggle of the brave freedom fighters and the resistance of the freedom-loving people, the Pak invaders retreated from the district town.

Just before the final victory, the brave freedom fighters surrounded Lalmonirhat at midnight on 5th December. On 6th December at 6 am from Lalmonirhat Railway Station, Pak Army, Razakar Albadar and their accomplices fled to Rangpur Cantonment in two special trains.

After crossing the Teesta river, Pakistani troops bombed the Teesta rail bridge. It caused severe damage to the bridge. On this day in Lalmonirhat '71, the joy of liberation spread everywhere. As soon as the news spread that Lalmonirhat was liberated from the enemy, people started rushing towards the town from all directions.

By evening the town (now Mission Mor) area was full of people. The town and surrounding villages erupted in slogans. The young, the old and the people of all ages started running around with the flag of their country with joyful voices. A joyous procession took place in various streets of the town.

M Khademul Bashar of the Air Force was the commander of the 6th sector during the liberation war. On December 6, when people from all walks of life entered the town with the allied forces, he hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh.

Bir Pratik Captain (retd) Azizul Haque, the only freedom fighter who received Lalmonirhat's hero symbol, recalled the liberation war with tears in his eyes.

Various political, social, and freedom fighter organizations of Lalmonirhat have undertaken various programs to celebrate the unforgettable day with due honor.
