Election campaign: EC issued 720 show-cause notices, filed 51 cases
Despite having no strong competitor against the ruling party in the 12th parliamentary election, a good number of candidates failed to follow the rules. The party's current ministers, MPs, and independent candidates had been violating the election code of conduct. So far, the election search committee has issued show-cause notifications 720 times. Cases have been filed against 51 people.
Most of the accused persons are ruling party candidates and supporters. Two candidates of the boat syblol have been fined. Meanwhile, the election campaign of the candidates ended at 8 am on Friday (January 5). Now just wait for the vote.
For the first time, the Election Commission (EC) has formed election search committees comprising district and session judges, senior assistant judges and assistant judges in 300 constituencies to follow the electoral code of conduct. The EC show-cause list includes ministers, MPs, independent candidates, supporters of the candidates, and officials of various government and private organizations. After the show-cause notice, reports of about 400 people have been sent to the EC.
It is seen that along with the candidates, their followers, leaders and supporters, and some government officials have also been accused of violating the code of conduct.
Besides, EC canceled the candidature of an independent candidate. Two candidates were fined for violating the code of conduct. Among them, AKM Bahauddin Bahar of Comilla-6 and Dhirendra Nath Shambhu of Barguna-2 were fined Tk 50,000 each.

According to available data, Awami League candidates and their supporters are ahead in violation of the code of conduct. Of the 720 show-cause notices, more than 200 are against Awami League nominees. Most of them are current MPs. Besides, there are independent candidates, Jatiya Party candidates and police administration officials who received such notices from EC.
The list of violations of the code of conduct shows that some candidates have been issued with show-cause for more than once. Among them, Abdul Hai of the Jhenaidah-1 constituency was show-caused three times, Bahauddin Bahar of Comilla-6 constituency also received three notices and Dhirendra Nath Shambhu of Barguna-1 constituency was show-caused for four times.
Textiles and Jute Minister Golam Dastagir Gazi, MP from Narayanganj-1 (Rupganj), State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell of Gazipur-2 and Awami League candidate for Dhaka-19 constituency, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr. Enamur Rahman, Awami League nominated candidate for Narsingdi-5 (Raipura) Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju, former State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Meher Afroz Chumki, Awami League candidate for Magura-1 constituency candidate for Awami League Cricketer Shakib-al-Hasan are in the list.
The EC also decided to file cases against Abul Kalam Azad of Rajshahi-4 constituency, Morshed Alam of Noakhali-2 constituency, Ataur Rahman of the same constituency; Golam Mahfuz Chowdhury of Joypurhat-2 constituency; Independent candidate Jannatul Ferdous Ara in Netrokona-1, Jatiya Party's Md Ali Aslam in Magura-2; Murad Ali and Abdul Mannan of Meherpur-1.
Earlier, the EC filed cases against Jhenaidah-1 constituency boat candidate Abdul Hye and Chattogram-16 constituency boat candidate Mostafizur Rahman and others.
According to the Police Headquarters, around 215 people have been arrested across the country in the last few days in the violence centering the election and about 184 cases have been filed during this period.
The leaders and activists of the ruling party are mainly involved in these clashes. In most of the cases, supporters of independent candidates and election campaign camps have been attacked by the supporters of the boat candidate.
In November and December, 221 firearms were recovered and 438 people were arrested in connection with illegal arms, the police headquarters said.
The voting in 299 seats will be held from 8 am to 4 pm on Sunday (January 7) without any break. A total of 1,090 candidates from 28 parties and independent candidates are contesting the election. A total of 11 crore 93 lakh 32 thousand 934 people are voters. There are 42,103 polling centers. And there are 2 lakh 62 thousand voting rooms that are ready for the 12th National Parliamentary Election 2024.
