On polling day 'housewife gang-rape' case verdict today in Noakhali
On December 30, 2018, the election day of the 11th Jatiya Sangsad, the verdict of the case of rape of a housewife in Subarnachar Upazila of Noakhali will be announced today.
This incident discussed on Tuesday (January 16) was widely criticized nationwide. Even in foreign media, the news was also reported.
Judge (District Judge) Fatema Ferdous of District Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal-2 is scheduled to announce the verdict on Tuesday. Earlier, the judge fixed the verdict date on November 29 after further arguments.
On December 30, 2018, the housewife (40) was beaten and gang-raped in the Charbagga village of Charjubli Union of the upazila on the following night of 11th National election. When the incident took place on the night of the National Parliament election, it was widely discussed at home and abroad. The victim of torture was a mother of 4 children. She alleged that the incident happened because the people in the polling station did not vote for their preferred symbol.
It is known that the day after the incident, the husband of the victim housewife filed a case under Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act at Charjabbar police station mentioning the names of 9 people. Later, after the investigation of the case, Sub-Inspector (SI) Zakir Hossain of District Detective Police filed a charge sheet against 16 people including the expelled Publicity Secretary of Subarnachar Upazila Awami League member Ruhul Amin on March 27, 2019.
On Monday (January 15) the night before the verdict was announced, the husband of the victimized housewife was spoken to. He complained that they are currently in insecurity. A few people with a few motorcycles are practicing in front of their house. They informed the local public representative and the officer in charge of Charjabbar police station.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Charjabbar Police Station Rafiqul Islam denied the allegation and said that no one informed me about the matter. However, security will be provided upon receiving instructions from higher authorities.
Public prosecutor of the state, Saleh Ahmad Sohail Khan, said in the court, 23 witnesses were presented by the state in this case. Five defense witnesses were presented by the accused. None of the witnesses mentioned in their statement that such an incident occurred due to non-voting of the preferred symbol at the polling station. In the case, charges have been framed against 16 accused including member Ruhul Amin. Police arrested 15 accused. An accused named Md. Mintu alias Helal (28) has been absconding since the incident. The verdict in the case is expected to be announced on Tuesday morning.
Mollah Habibur Rashul Mamun, the plaintiff's lawyer and former president of the District Bar, said in the court that there are 15 accused in the jail in the case of gang rape of women in Subarnachar. Among them, 8 accused confessed their guilt and gave a confessional statement in the court.
