PM wants France's cooperation in sustainable development

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has sought the cooperation of France and other development partners to continue the ongoing development of Bangladesh.

We have a long way to go. So, the cooperation of development partners including France is necessary to sustain the development of Bangladesh, said Sheikh Hasina.

The Prime Minister said this when Mrs. Marie Masdupoui, Ambassador of France appointed to Dhaka, paid a courtesy call with her at Ganabhaban on Tuesday (January 23) morning.

After the meeting, PM's speech writer and Additional Press Secretary M Nazrul Islam briefed the journalists. The Prime Minister said that once Bangladesh was known as a country of poverty, flood and drought. And now it has transformed into a developing country through extensive development, Nazrul Islam informed.

Prime Minister said that today's Bangladesh is a completely different country where development is taking place at grassroot level. Every village in the country has been illuminated with electricity and connected to the communication network. It lot of changes have occurred in rural areas and poverty has reduced significantly, she said.

The government has planned to build flats for poor people in rural areas, Sheikh Hasina also mentioned.

On the Rohingya issue, the Prime Minister said that the forcibly displaced Myanmar citizens should be repatriated to their own country.

They are involved in various criminal activities like drug, arms and human trafficking here. The Prime Minister urged Western countries, including France, to increase pressure on Myanmar for the speedy repatriation of the Rohingyas.

Regarding the Pakistanis stuck in Bangladesh, the Prime Minister said, their fourth generation is living here. She said, Pakistan does not seem to take them back. We are planning to construct flats for them to ensure their permanent resettlement here.

She urged French gas companies to invest in Bangladesh's gas sector and gas exploration.

They also discussed some bilateral issues including the purchase of Airbus and the launch of Bangabandhu Satellite-2.

The ambassador handed over a congratulatory message to French President Emmanuel Macron on his re-election as head of government. Referring to the visit of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to France in 2021 and the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Bangladesh in 2023, she said that France and Bangladesh have excellent bilateral relations.

These visits have strengthened the relationship between the two countries, said Sheikh Hasina.

Regarding the climate issue, the French ambassador said that het country supports Bangladesh in obtaining mitigation funds and wants to see Bangladesh as a pioneer in using these funds.

She mentioned that Bangladesh is an example of dealing with climate change. She also said that France wants to help Bangladesh transition to green energy.

The ambassador said that her country wants to help Bangladesh in blue economy and cyber security.

Prime Minister's advisor Salman Fazlur Rahman, Ambassador at-Large M Ziauddin and Chief Secretary M Tofajzel Hossain Mia were present.
