Dr. Yunus lost in the High Court

Nobel Peace Prize winning economist Dr. Mohammad Yunus lost in the High Court when the court ruled that his Grameen Telecom Trust has to file an income tax appeal for the year 2011-13 after depositing Tk. 50 crore.

On Monday (February 12) the bench consisting of Justice Md. Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice Rashed Jahangir gave the verdict. Dr. Yunus's application was rejected and this verdict was given. At the same time, the court said that according to the law, Dr. Yunus has to pay. No mercy here.

On January 28, at 11 o'clock in the court, he appealed to the labor appeal tribunal against the judgment of the labor court in the case of violation of the labor law by Dr. Yunus and three other top officials of Grameen Telecom. The Labor Appellate Tribunal granted bail to four people including Dr. Muhammad Yunus. At the same time, the court accepted the appeal for hearing. The Labor Appellate Tribunal suspended the sentence given by the Labor Court that day.

Earlier, he sought bail in the Labor Appellate Tribunal. At the same time, he appealed against the 6-month sentence in the labor law violation case, seeking acquittal on 25 grounds. That morning, Dr. Yunus appeared in the Labor Appeal Tribunal and appealed.

On January 1, the chairman of the third labor court of Dhaka, Sheikh Marina Sultana, in a case against the chairman of Grameen Telecom Dr. Yunus and its directors Ashraful Hassan, Nurjahan Begum and M Shahjahan were sentenced to six months in prison. At the same time, the court sentenced all four of them to a fine of Tk. 30,000 and in default of payment, another 25 days imprisonment. And when they applied for separate bail after the verdict, the court granted bail to all the four people in view of their application.

Before that, on November 16, the Prosecution side finished presenting their arguments in the case. Earlier, on June 6 last year, when charges were framed against them, the statements of four witnesses of the state side were recorded.

It is to be noted that on September 9, 2021, Labor Inspector (General) SM Arifuzzaman of the Factory and Establishment Inspection Division filed the case in the Third Labor Court of Dhaka for violating the labor law. According to the documents, on August 16, 2021, IFED officials visited Grameen Telecom's office in the capital's Mirpur and found some violations of labor laws.
