Price hike of sugar by Tk. 30 per kg by TCB
The state-owned marketing agency Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) has hiked the price of sugar abnormally. The organization has decided to increase the price of sugar from Tk. 70 to Tk. 100 per kg.
According to a notification issued on Wednesday (March 6), the new price of sugar has been mentioned in the information regarding the sale of products at subsidized prices from Thursday (March 7).
Due to the shortage of sugar in the market, TCB has stopped selling sugar at low prices for a long time. TCB at present present supplying only oil and pulses. Many people were shocked by the sudden increase in the price of sugar. Last Ramadan too, the price of sugar per kg was Tk. 60.
TCB Chairman Brigadier General Ariful Hasan said, TCB was selling sugar with 30 to 32 percent subsidy in line with the market. As the market price is high at present, the amount of subsidy has been reduced a little.
He also said that if there is a large gap between the price and the market, there is an opportunity for abuse. For this reason, the price has been set in line with the market so that no one can take extra advantage.
The government has been providing essential commodities including oil, dal, rice, sugar, onion to one crore poor families of the country through family cards. A consumer with a family card can buy a maximum of two liters of soybean oil, two kg of lentils, one kg of sugar and one kg of dates. In this case, the price of soybean oil will be kept at Tk. 100 per liter, sugar at Tk. 100 per kg, lentils at Tk. 60, dates at Tk. 150 and rice at Tk. 30 per kg.
According to TCB, the distributors will conduct this activity according to the scheduled date and time in cooperation with the city corporation, district and upazila administration. At this time, family card holders can buy products from distributors' shops or designated places in their respective areas.
Meanwhile, Commerce State Minister Ahsanul Islam will inaugurate the second phase of sales activities on the occasion of Ramadan. Its inauguration ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. today on Thursday at North City Corporation's Ward No. 24 at the Polytechnic ground near East Colony Bazar, Tibet Mor.
