S. Alam Group is optimistic about refine and supply sugar on Saturday
The unfortunate fire incident in a sugar warehouse of S. Alam Refined Sugar Mill has been brought under complete control. This terrible fire happened in the afternoon of March 4. The warehouse fire was completely extinguished after about 64 hours due to the overall efforts of the government officials, fire service, navy and air force and the employees and administration of the mill. In order to resume production and supply of sugar from next Saturday (March 9), cleaning of mills has started in full swing.
As a result of the fire, about one lakh tons of unrefined sugar was burnt. Fortunately 3-4 other sugar warehouses located nearby were not damaged by the fire. Refined sugar is ready for next 10-12 days which will ensure market supply for consumers. Moreover, resumption of sugar refining operations from Saturday will help control the market situation.
S. Alam Group General Manager Akhtar Hasan said, "From this afternoon, the supply of sugar to the market is starting from the already refined stock. Production will start at the main factory from next Saturday. Maximum efforts will be made to ensure that no impact of this fire falls on the market.”
He further said, “The burnt warehouse contained more than one lakh metric tons of unrefined sugar. The rest of the warehouses currently have 6,41,000 metric tons of sugar raw material.”
S. Alam Refined Sugar Mill had all required fire equipment and fire fighting systems. However, the fire could not be brought under immediate control as the severity of the fire was excessive. The district administration has already formed a seven-member committee under the leadership of the Additional District Magistrate to investigate the cause of the country's biggest fire in a sugar mill. The Directorate of Factories has said to investigate whether it is a case of sabotage or not.
To avoid environmental pollution in the event of fire - melted sugar the S. Alam Group is being removed to its own vacant lot. About 30 dumb trucks are dumping the melted raw sugar besides trying their best to prevent the raw sugar from falling into the river. Besides, sand embankments have been provided in case of collapse of warehouse walls. All precautionary measures were taken as per the advice of experts.
