Primary and secondary schools to remain closed during Ramadan: High Court

The High Court has ordered that primary and secondary schools will remain closed during the holy month of Ramadan.

The High Court bench led by Justice Kamrul Quader passed the order on Sunday (March 10) afternoon.

Earlier, the High Court had stayed the notification to keep schools open during Ramadan.

In a circular of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education on February 8, it is said that the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education has decided to continue regular teaching activities in government primary schools for the first 10 days of the upcoming Holy Ramadan after partially revising the list of holidays and curriculum for the 2024 academic year to meet the educational deficit of students.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Education has decided to continue the class activities of public and private secondary and lower secondary schools for a total of 15 days from March 11 to March 25.

According to the Ministry of Education, the list of public and private secondary and lower secondary schools for the academic year of 2024 (1430-1431 Bengal AD) and the list of academic year has been partially revised.

In this regard, on February 25, the lawyer Elias Ali Mandal filed a writ in the High Court challenging the validity of the decision to keep primary and secondary schools open during Ramadan.

Primary and Mass Education Secretary, Education Secretary, Deputy Secretary Primary and Mass Education, Deputy Secretary Education, Director General (DG) of Primary Education Department, Director of Child Welfare Trust have been made defendants in the writ.

Ramadan will start from March 12 subject to sighting of the moon.
