Fire to 5 vehicles in Savar: complaints towards R&H!

Allegations have been leveled against the Roads and Highways (R&H) authorities after an oil-carrying lorry overturned and caught fire on the Dhaka-Aricha highway in Jorpul area of Savar in Dhaka. Although the construction work is going on at the accident site, no signs or markings can be seen anywhere in the vicinity.

The accident took place on Tuesday (April 2) around 5:30 am in Jorpul area of Dhaka-Aricha highway.

According to the fire service, the oil lorry overturned when the wheel went up on the boulder in the middle of the road. The fire started after the oil spilled from there. This fire spread to 4 other vehicles nearby. A watermelon laden truck, a cement laden truck, a covered van and a private car were damaged by the fire.

Eyewitness Aminul Islam said that the oil tanker overturned due to the boulder and then caught fire. Then the other vehicles caught fire. There are no signs of work in progress. Such an incident might not have happened if the eyewitnesses' claims were accurate.

Rajiur Rahman, Circle ASP of Gazipur Region of Highway Police, said that the work of R&H was going on at the accident site. The tank lorry overturned after colliding with the boulders that R&H had placed to divide the road. From there the accident started.

Deputy Assistant Director of Fire Service Dhaka Zone 4 Md. Alauddin said large stones (boulders) were placed at the accident site to construct a U-turn. The lorry overturned and the oil spilled when the wheel of the car got on that rock. There was no sign or marking on the road even though the work was going on. In the early morning incident the driver unconsciously or lost control collided with the boulder. Then the accident happened.

In this incident, a person named Iqbal Hossain (34) died on the spot due to fire. It was initially reported that he lived in Hemayetpur in Savar and worked as a cement truck loader. Another person named Nazrul was taken to the hospital where the doctors declared him dead. Besides, the injured under treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Burn Institute are Helal (30), Shakib (24), A. Salam (35), Milan Molla (22), Al Amin (35), Niranjan (45) and Mim (10). Among them, Helal and Shakib are in serious condition.

In this regard, the Executive Engineer of the Dhaka division of R&H. Mohammad Ahad Ullah and Executive Engineer of Dhaka Sub-Division 2 Mominul Islam could not be reached despite repeated calls.
