At present, Eid shopping is dominated by women in shopping malls and markets. There are many funny sayings about this in society. But do women go out shopping only voluntarily or out of pleasure or does it have a sense of family responsibility? What are they thinking? The reporter of Barta24.com visited various shopping malls and markets to find out.

On Fridays and Saturdays, various shopping malls and markets of the capital can be seen, the sole dominance of women in Eid shopping. Some are bringing their children and some are shopping alone. Even if some bring their husbands, they are more busy handling shopping bags and children than shopping.

For example, a couple met at Bashundhara shopping mall in the capital last Friday. Husband was very upset and said, give me whatever money was needed but I can't come. On asking what the reason for such irritation is, he said, I get one day off from office in a week, then it starts from noon to evening but the shopping is not completed. I think shopping for girls is better done by girls. So I'm not coming to shop anymore.

Such incidents are often happening around us, yet in such a cut-off time, after finishing work in the family, fasting, women are coming to the shopping mall with new responsibilities. They do not hesitate to look at men's reluctance and family, thinking of children. Rather, they are going out shopping with the society's bad things in mind. Without thinking about his own suffering, he smiles on the faces of all the family.

One such was Jharna Begum. She lives in Mirpur with two children and husband. Husband works in a private company. He gets a day off during the week on Friday, so without disturbing him, she was coming to Mirpur No. 10 to shop with her children. Along with the children, she also has to buy clothes for her husband, in-laws and other relatives. So shopping has to be done to prevent this heat.

In response to the question that you are coming alone, why did you not bring your husband, she told Barta24.com that she gets one day off, she has to work all week. So I didn't bother him anymore. But even if he doesn't come, he has to go shopping on one Eid a year. There are children, parents-in-law, father's house and mother-in-law's relatives. Everyone has to shop. So I'm coming even though it's a little difficult, I'm doing some shopping, there's still some left. Let's see if I can't finish all the shopping today then I will have to come another day.

Suraiya Jahan, a housewife who came from Dhanmondi to New market for Eid shopping, told Barta24.com that although many things are changing now, we still cannot get out of the patriarchal mindset. Many still do not want girls to leave the house. They have such a comment because they don't want it. But women also have to manage their house, and all women have to manage their own house, in-law's house. But she thinks that men are coming out from there now. Many men are now giving equal importance to themselves and their wives.

Barta24.com reporter spoke to Farhad Hossain, who works in a multinational company, in New market. He said that women were previously confined to the house, but now they are working equally with men in all sectors. Be it home or office. But he also thinks that there are still people in society who look down on women. But it will take some time to get out of there. Farhad expressed the hope that men and women will advance on an equal footing through the spread of education among all.
