Fire in DU's Zahurul Haque Hall in the midnight, students controlled later
A fire broke out in room number 250 on the second floor of the main building of Dhaka University (DU) Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall. However, within 15-20 minutes of the fire, the fire was brought under control by the efforts of the students in the hall.
It is said that the incident started on Monday (April 8) around 2:30 in the morning. The administration said that the fire occurred due to an electric short circuit.
According to eyewitnesses and hall administration sources, no one was in the room as all the students of room number 250 had gone home during the Eid holidays. However, the students' certificates, books, three trunks, table chairs and other important items were burnt in the fire.
Sabirul Islam, an eyewitness of the hall in the nearby room, said, "A fire broke out in room number 250 at half past two in the morning." The room was locked at that time. Everyone in the room went home for Eid vacation. As soon as the fire started, I broke the lock of the room and brought it under control with the help of water and a fire extinguisher. Meanwhile, three trunks with important papers, books, notebooks, and clothes were burnt.
He also said that there were four people in the room. Important documents including certificates of two of them were burnt.
When contacted Ayub Moral, resident student of this room for the academic year 2019-20 management department, he said, "Everyone in the room was at home. I know that the room was damaged due to the fire. Our luggage, trunk, bed were all destroyed.
Sergeant Zahurul Haque Hall Provost Professor Dr. Md. Abdur Rahim said, "I went there immediately after hearing about the fire." The fire service was also called and they came. But before that, the students extinguished the fire.
As to the cause of the fire, he said, 'It is an isolated incident. If there is a weakness in the electronic line, it should be reported to the hall office, if there is an electrician. They will fix it. Also, it is the responsibility of the students to tidy up the room before going home on vacation. Now it is very difficult to recover the damage they have done. Certificates of many have been burnt. The subject is really difficult.
He thinks that students should check whether the lights, fans and electronic items of the room were working properly and increase overall awareness before going home from the room or on vacation.
