Bangladeshi killed in BSF firing at Cumilla border

A Bangladeshi named Anwar Hossain (50) was killed in firing by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at Cumilla border.

The incident took place on the border of Jamtala in Bakshimul Union of Burichong Upazila around 8:30 AM on Sunday (June 9).

The deceased Anwar is the son of Charu Mia of Mirpur village of that union. BSF returned Anwar's body in the evening after 10 hours of the incident, said 60 BGB captain Lt. Colonel AM Jaber bin Jabbar.

According to local sources, Anwar was a laborer carrying smuggled sugar from India. On Saturday morning, 5-6 people including him went across the border to fetch sugar. At that time, BSF fired several rounds and Anwar fell on the ground. At this time others ran away. The sound of gunfire spread panic among the locals.

Local people found Anwar's body lying on the Indian side of the border. After some time BSF took the body to Banganagar Social Health Center in India.

Local UP member Abul Kashem said, after receiving the news, I went to the barbed wire fence area along with members of Shankuchail BGB camp. Anwar's body was seen there. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and one son.

BGB-BSF flag meeting was held at Jamtala area in the afternoon. In the evening, BSF handed over the body to the BGB through Hyderbad area of Rajapur union on the border.

On the other hand, a farmer named Altab Hossain (55) was injured by rubber bullets fired by BSF on Singimari border of Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat. In this incident, seven Bangladeshis have been accused in the case of BGB for illegal entry into India.

Last Friday afternoon, Altab was working in the infield of Bangladesh in the middle of the 8s of the main pillar number 893. At that time suddenly BSF entered Bangladesh and fired rubber bullets and it hit Altab in the chest. A BGB-BSF flag meeting was held on Saturday afternoon.
