More than 4.5 lakh raw hides have entered the Savar tannery, 1.5 lakh at Posta

Authorities said that more than 460,000 raw hides are entering Savar BSCIC Leather Industrial City in two days around Eid-ul-Azha.

As of Tuesday (June 18) afternoon, about 460,000 skins have entered Savar's leather industry and about 150,000 skins at Posta. Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) Chairman Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik confirmed this information to Barta24.com.

Earlier, skins of sacrificial animals started entering the leather industry located in the Harindhara area of Hemayetpur in Savar on Monday afternoon.

Around Tuesday afternoon, leather trucks were seen entering the industrial city. And tanneries are busy. Many are rubbing salt on raw skin. These salted skins are being arranged layer by layer.

A tannery worker named Sajedul Haque said, since yesterday, as soon as the skins come, I have been cleaning them and applying salt.

Tannery owners said that various Madrasas and seasonal traders started bringing leather from Monday afternoon.

The owner of Ajmer Leather located in Savar leather industry, Shahidullah told Barta24.com that raw hides without salt is coming in here. They are preserved with salt. This way it can be kept for at least two and a half months. We are buying leather directly from Madrasa. It was already talked about. I am taking them. The price fixed by the government is Tk. 1,200 for leather with salt. It takes Tk. 200-Tk. 250 to make salt. Raw hide is being purchased excluding this cost.

General Secretary of Bangladesh Tanners Association and Managing Director of Salma Tannery Sakhawat Ullah said that most of the target of skin collection on Eid day and today has been fulfilled. Leather is being procured at the price fixed by the government. Hope the target will be met.

Regarding the preparation of leather industrial city, the Executive Engineer of Savar's BSCIC Leather Industrial City Mahfuzur Rahman Rizoan told Barta24.com that about four and a half lakh skins have entered the tannery so far. More skin accomodation is possible.

BSCIC Chairman Sanjay Kumar Bhowmik told Barta 24.com that 460,000 pieces of leather are entering our Savar Tannery. This time, a record amount of salt has been produced across the country. We have arranged for adequate supply of salt through dealers in every district at marginal level and the price of salt has been reduced by two taka per kg compared to last time. So far we have not received any such report of salt shortage anywhere in the country. The price of leather is determined by the Ministry of Commerce, the consumer and I have told myself today as well. No major incidents have been reported so far.
