Patients are fleeing the hospital in fear of arrest

Over 200 injured patients are receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital(DMCH) due to the violence surrounding the movement demanding reform of quota system in government jobs. However, fearing arrest, many are running away from the hospital without informing the authorities. As a result, there is no patient in the bed even though there is a name in the hospital register.

This information was known by visiting different wards of Dhaka Medical College Hospital from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm on Thursday (July 25).

Relatives of the patients said that the police is collecting information about the injured patients who were shot in the violence. There is panic among patients and their relatives. Many are leaving the hospital.

Meanwhile, entry to each ward has also been strictly enforced. No one except the patient's relatives is allowed to enter the ward. The Ansar members in charge said that the authorities have instructions that no one except the patient's relatives will be allowed to enter.

Relatives of the patients went to Ward number 101 in disguise and found that at least 15 patients were receiving treatment due to gunshot wounds. Among them are several children and teenagers. Ariful Islam, a fourth grade student of Rampura Ideal School and son of Kamrul Islam, a resident of Ulon area of Rampur, is undergoing treatment on the floor of the ward. On his way back home after playing with his friends, he was shot in the right leg in Rampura area. Later, the locals rescued him and admitted him to the hospital.

Two people died today while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College after receiving serious injuries after being shot in the incident of violence in Rayerbagh and Narsingdi of the capital. They are construction worker Zakir Hossain (29), a resident of Rayerbagh area. He is the son of Abdul Mannan of Dasmina area of Patuakhali. On July 21, he was shot and admitted to DMCH. He died while undergoing treatment after 12 o'clock last night.

The son of Shahidul Islam of Nandail area of Mymensingh died on Wednesday morning night. Zaman (17) was admitted to DMCH on July 21 after being shot in the incident of violence in Narsingdi. Zaman, a garment worker by profession, has multiple bullet marks on his body.

When asked about admission and death in DMCH, Director of(DMCH) Brigadier General Md. Asaduzzaman said, 278 people have been admitted in various wards of DMCH so far. The death toll in the last few days is 79.

When asked about the professional identity of the injured and the dead, he said, such information cannot be given now. We are now working to serve patients.
