Jubo League attacked students procession in Cumilla, 5 received gunshot injury
It has been alleged that the Jubo League attacked the protest procession of students under the banner of anti-discrimination student movement in Cumilla. Five students received gun shot injury.
On Saturday (August 3), when the students came to Kandirpar's Pubali square from the Zilla school for a mass rally, the police dispersed them by lobbing sound grenades. After that the activists of Cumilla Mahanagar Chhatra League, Jubo League, Swechchsebak League fired at the students and beat them up.
It was seen that when the students gathered from Cumilla Zilla School at 10 am to hold a symbolic cultural program at 11 am for a protest program and mass march, they tried to send the students home with various threats. Even then, when they tried to gather, the police first lobbed sound grenades to disperse them. Later, when the students dispersed, activists associated with pro-Awami politics, including Cumilla Mahanagar Chhatra League, Jubo League, Swachhasebak League, fired at the students. Besides, ramada and other indigenous weapons were seen in their hands at this time.
The students dispersed from Pubali Chattar and gathered towards the Police Lines and when they proceeded with the procession towards Shirangacha, they came under attack there another round. Journalists were prevented from collecting news throughout the period. A journalist of the local daily Cumilla paper was beaten up and his mobile phone was broken.
Cumilla Sadar Hospital Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr. Abdul Karim said that 6 students were given treatment. Two persons were shot pellets. As of writing this report, all have been treated and left the hospital.
Besides, Cumilla Medical College Hospital director Dr. Fazle Hasan Rabbi said that a total of 6 students were admitted to the hospital. They have been treated.
A total of five students were given treatment for gunshot injury in Cumilla's two hospitals. More injured students have been admitted to various private hospitals in Cumilla city. However, no death has been reported so far.
A student named Saiful Islam Sohan of the Finance & Banking department of Cumilla University was seriously injured. However he has gone home after treatment.
