Committee on Police Reforms to be formed soon: Home Affairs Adviser

Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd.) said that a committee will be formed soon for police reform.

He said this during a meeting with an eight-member delegation led by Stephen Leeler, the resident representative of UNDP assigned to Bangladesh in his own office at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Monday (September 9) afternoon.

During the meeting, various issues including police reforms, flood rehabilitation were discussed between the two sides.

Advisers on police reforms said it was still in its infancy. No committee has been formed in this regard yet. However, a preliminary committee will soon be formed for the purpose of police reform. The initial committee will determine the process, how and who will be involved in the reforms.

The adviser also said that after accepting the recommendations and opinions of the preliminary committee, the process will be taken forward and the next course of action will be determined. At that time, formal discussions will be held with UNDP and other interested countries and their opinions and suggestions will be accepted. However, only those opinions and suggestions which are relevant in the context of Bangladesh will be considered for further action and implementation.

In this regard, the resident representative of UNDP said that the police reform in Bangladesh should be done in such a way that the people can gain trust and confidence in the police and there is no criticism. He suggested the implementation of this reform on a large scale after discussing with the people including representatives of the civil society. He also said that the United Nations is ready to provide necessary technical and financial support in this regard.

In the meeting, the resident representative said that UNDP is conducting a study on flood rehabilitation in Bangladesh. Moreover, the meeting was informed that USD 1 billion will be spent on this work by UNDP.

He suggested the implementation of this reform on a large scale after discussing with the people including representatives of the civil society. He also said that the United Nations is ready to provide necessary technical and financial support in this regard.

In the meeting, the resident representative said that UNDP is conducting a study on flood rehabilitation in Bangladesh. Apart from that, it is reported that one billion US dollars will be spent on this work by UNDP.
