Closed factories of Ashulia will open today

Garment factories in Savar's Ashulia were closed for a long time due to unrest in the garment sector and labor protests. These factories, which have been closed indefinitely, will start opening from Saturday (September 14).

The decision was taken at a meeting of BGMEA and local political leaders on Friday (September 13) evening.

The meeting was attended by Managing Director of Ha-Meem Group AK Azad, President of BGMEA Khandaker Rafiqul Islam, Senior Vice President Abdullah Hill Rakib and others.

BGMEA Senior Vice President Abdullah Hill Rakib said, it has been decided to open the closed factory in Ashulia from Saturday. Gazipur factories will also open. Owners who feel positive about opening factories will open. Ha-meem, Sharmeen and other big group factories will open.

Abdullah Hill Rakib also said, we have been assured of more security by the army. Apart from that, there will be executive magistrates in joint operations. The government has taken this decision to punish the troublemakers immediately.

The garment sector has been in turmoil for the past two consecutive weeks due to labor protests over various demands. As a result, 257 garment factories in Savar-Ashulia and Gazipur were closed on Thursday (September 12). Among them, 94 factories were closed indefinitely by the owners. In Ashulia alone, 86 factories were closed indefinitely.

Meanwhile, BGMEA said that 115 garment factories in Savar, Ashulia and Gazipur were closed. Overall, 74.39 percent factories (members of BGMEA) have paid wages for the month of August till Thursday. 549 factory wages are outstanding.
