1500 tourists trapped in the blockade
At least 1500 tourists are stuck while visiting Sajek Valley, famous for the state of clouds.
Tourists were stranded in the Chattogram Hill Tracts on Saturday (September 21) due to a 72-hour road and waterway blockade program called by the United People's Democratic Front UPDF, a regional organization of Tribals.
Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shirin Akhter confirmed the truth of the incident and said that about 1500 tourists are stuck in the ongoing situation of the mountain. They are all safe and sound, UNO said, adding that we are keeping a close eye on them.
She also said that if the situation calms down tomorrow, then these tourists will be dispatched safely.
Locally, it has been found that mainly the pro-Prasit UPDF, an organization of tribals against the mountain agreement, is more dominated from Khagrachari to Sajek. The picketing in support of the ongoing 72-hour blockade program called by them on this route has damaged roads, bridges and culverts at least 6 places on the Dighinala to Baghaihat route and stopped traffic.
Khagrachari jeep lineman Md Yashin Arafat said that 115 jeeps and 50 to 55 CNG vehicles entered Sajek on Friday morning and afternoon. Those vehicles are stuck.
He said that due to the blockade of UPDF, the besiegers set fire at various places on the road. Decks have been removed from Bailey bridges. In this situation, it is dangerous to travel by tourist vehicle. So no vehicle has returned from Sajek on behalf of the association.
