UN is seriously monitoring the July massacre

The United Nations has taken the issue of the massacre that took place in July-August around the anti-discrimination student movement in Bangladesh very seriously. The head of the organization’s Human Rights Commission, Falkar Turk, said that the UN will cooperate with Bangladesh in ensuring fair trials for those involved in the massacre.

Falkar Turk told reporters after a meeting with Law Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul at the Secretariat on Tuesday (October 29).

He said, I spoke with the Law Adviser about establishing the rule of law and human rights issues. These two issues are related to each other. I said that the current government should ensure human rights in the reform initiatives it has taken in various fields. The fact-finding committee is working on the July massacre. We are considering the issue seriously. Our headquarters is monitoring the entire issue.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Falker Türk arrived in Dhaka on Monday night on a two-day official visit. During the visit, the UN human rights chief will also meet with advisers to various ministries, the chief justice, the army chief and heads of various reform commissions. Türk will deliver a speech at Dhaka University, where he will meet students involved in the recent anti-discrimination movement. He will also meet with various UN agencies and members of diplomatic missions in Bangladesh.
