‘Foreign policy will be Bangladesh-centric, not in the interest of any party’
Commenting that foreign policy will be Bangladesh-centric, not in the interest of any party, adviser to the interim government Mahfuz Alam said that there has been talk of ensuring that national interests remain intact in foreign policy even if the government changes.
Adviser Md. Mahfuz Alam made these remarks at the end of the ‘Forming a New Bangladesh: Internal Reforms and Foreign Policy’ discussion hosted by Foreign Secretary Md. Jasim Uddin at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday (December 29).
He said that the country’s sovereignty, national security and state integrity need to be considered as priorities in foreign policy. Stating that the government wants to maintain good relations with all countries while protecting the country’s interests, Mahfuz Alam said that the foreign policy of the previous government was subservient.
He said that decisions on foreign policy need to be made through discussions among political parties, keeping in mind that foreign policy does not have to be changed if the government changes.
Adviser Mahfuz Alam said, "Let there be good relations with all countries, we do not want any arrogance. If the current government has done anything arrogant, it will be corrected."
Present at the time were Information Advisor Nahid Islam and Foreign Secretary Md. Jasim Uddin.
