Awami League will not be able to return to elections: Shafiqul Alam
Although there are rumors that Awami League will participate in the upcoming elections, the party will not be able to return, said Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary to the interim government's chief adviser.
He made this message in a post on his own Facebook profile on Wednesday (January 22).
He mentioned in the Facebook post that Awami League supporters who support genocide are under the misconception that if the country returns to elections, they will be able to return to the political process. But this is not possible unless they admit responsibility for crimes against humanity and eliminate those involved in murders and disappearances. In addition, Awami League members and their associates involved in the killings and human rights violations committed between 2009 and 2024 will also be tried.
Stating that he had met with various foreign diplomats and officials in recent months, he further wrote that they rarely called for reconciliation. They also understood that if the criminals do not admit their crimes, how can they call for reconciliation? Rather, they have supported reforms and fixing the country's institutions more.
Shafiqul Alam also alleged in his status that Awami League supporters have been trying to erase the memories of the 1974 famine, the Rakkhi Bahini massacre and Sheikh Mujib's one-party rule for years.
In this regard, he further said that the current generation has woken up and is aware of every human rights violation of the dictatorship. Their efforts are refreshing old memories every day.
