Writ for live broadcast of hearings of constitutional and important cases

A writ has been filed seeking a direction to broadcast hearings of public importance and constitutional cases filed in the Supreme Court live (Live Streaming).

On Monday (January 27), 10 people, including lawyers and law students, filed this writ case.

The writ petitioners are: Supreme Court lawyers Saddam Hossain, Abdullah Sadiq, Mizanul Haque, Dhaka Court lawyers Zayed Bin Amjad, trainee lawyers Mahmudul Hasan, Sabbir Ahmed and 4 law students.

The writ petitioners' lawyer Shishir Monir said, "The right to know information is recognized by law. The right to a fair trial is a constitutionally recognized right. Important cases from different countries of the world are broadcast live. According to Article 35 of our Constitution, fair and accountable trial is a fundamental right."

The writ seeks a rule on why the hearings of important Supreme Court cases will not be broadcast live. At the same time, a committee has been formed to formulate a policy.

Instructions have been sought from the ICT Ministry to provide logistical support in hearing important cases ongoing in the Appellate Division.

The Registrar General of the Supreme Court, the Law Ministry and the ICT Ministry have been made respondents in the writ petition.

The High Court bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury may hear the writ petition.
