Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said elections in the two city corporations in the capital will be held ‘at the right time’.
Speaking to reporters at his Secretariat office on Wednesday (Dec 4), Quader said his party wants the election at the right time.
“The Election Commission sought proposals from us on the two city corporation elections. I’ve talked to the prime minister on the matter. She said unequivocally that it [fixing schedule] is the jurisdiction of the EC,” he said.
Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said Awami League is reorganising its city units to secure victory in the city elections.
“We’ve given the two city units of Awami League clean-image leadership. We’ve done it as we want to participate and secure victory in the city elections,” he said.
To a question on the potential mayoral candidates of the ruling party, Quader said, “We’ve nomination board to decide the matter… However, we’re looking for candidates.”
Asked if Awami League central committee is going to see new leaders through the upcoming national council, he said, “Awami League council means new committee with a combination of new and old leaders.”
Answering a question whether any new face is coming to the general secretary post, Quader said, “I’ve told you on several occasions that it’s the jurisdiction of [Awami League] chief Sheikh Hasina.”
