Syedpur Railway workshop- the lone manufacturer of rail spares
From Syedpur Workshop: Syedpur Railway workshop is built on 110 acres of land. The passenger trains and its related spares are manufactured here which is not done any where in the country.
In 1870 the then British Government had established the Syedpur Railway Workshop on 110 acres of land. In 1903 the workshop was converted into the repair workshop of meter gauge passenger train, goods carriage and locomotive engines. In 1953 it became a full fledged workshop.
On last Saturday (Dec.21) during visit to this century old workshop it was found that both repair and maintenance of the passenger carriages, goods carriages and if necessary engines are done here.
During visit it was learnt that, generally after some definite period the passenger coaches are done routine repair. As for example the inter-city trains the repair is done after every one year to check any problem. Besides, the intercity coaches are carried out big overhauling after 12 years which takes at least two months while routine repair takes 28 days to one month.
However, beyond routine repair many heavy works are done in this workshop. When a train meets an accident then heavy repair is done here.
The specialty of this workshop is that some spares are manufactured here which cannot be done in any other workshop in the country. The spares are manufactured here by most modern manufacturing machineries. Again the rejected wheels of carriages are melted here and necessary spares are manufactured.
Syedpur Railway workshop production in charge Sub Assistant Engineer(Mechanical) Md. Jahangir Alam told barta24.com that in fact the passenger coaches, goods carriages and the spares of the cranes used in rescuing the accident of the carriages are produced here. Besides, many other spares of the trains are manufactured.
The divisional superintending engineer of Syedpur Rail workshop Md. Zaidul Islam told barta24.com that all the repair work of all types of broad gauge coaches is done here. Moreover, we manufacture such rare spares which are not produced elsewhere in the country. This is the difference between Pahartali workshop and Syedpur workshop.
He further said that the spares used for repairing the rail coaches are tested in the laboratory to check the quality and if it is found up to the mark then we use it because we like to ensure the highest security of the passengers in repairing the coaches.
