Erosion threat increases in Madaripur
Due to rise of water in different rivers of Madaripur district, several areas of the district including Shibchar upazilla are being flooded anew. At the same time, houses, structures are being washed away by the river. The overall flood situation is getting alarming day by day as a result road communication is being cut off.
On Friday (July 24) afternoon, some former areas including the char areas of Shibchar were visited. A total of 19 unions, including 6 unions in the upazilla char area, are now flooded. Thousands of people were marooned there. As a result of the submersion of houses, people are staying in different shelters but they are in trouble with their cattle. Some have kept cows and goats on the bridge in the area, while others have been leaving them at relatives' houses. There is also a crisis of food, water and medicine.
On the other hand, the relief provided by the government is inadequate. People in the flood-hit areas of the district are complaining that they are huddled in shelters somewhere. Somewhere people are living in extreme misery and in sub- human condition.
On the other hand, water is also rising in Bashkandi, Baheratal, Bhandarikandi, Bhadrasan and other former areas of the upazilla. The increase in water in these areas is causing extreme human suffering. Hats, markets and roads have been inundated by flood water. Moreover, the communication system from one area to another is also closed as the roads and ghats are submerged in water.
It is learned that the water level in Shibchar's Padma was stable in last 24 hours. However, as the water level in the Padma and Arial Khan rivers continued to rise since Friday afternoon, river erosion has reached an alarming stage in different areas of Shibchar. After water level in Arial Khan continued to rise erosion has been multiplied in 7 unions. Besides, river erosion is taking place in Bandarkhola, Kanthalbari, Madbarerchar, Charjanajat, Sannyasirchar, Shiruail and Nilakhi Unions of Padma and Arialkhar upazillas due to rising water level since this afternoon.
Also new areas of the upazila are being flooded. A large part of the Nuruddin Madbarkandi SESDP Model High School building in Bandarkhola Union was devoured last Thursday afternoon due to the catastrophic erosion of the Padma. Besides, the Bandarkhola Union Parishad building, community clinic building, government primary school, important establishments including the market is facing threat of erosion.
As a result of the increase in water about 400 people are living in 6 shelters with government help in various primary schools including Bandarkhola Union Parishad Bhaban. Already more than 300 families including cattle and goods have been shifted to safer places. However, some of them have been seen taking their cattle to the shelter. In addition, many people are moving to safer places after demolishing their old houses.
The overall flood situation is worsening day by day. So far, more than 450 houses have been washed away in the river. About 3,000 people have taken shelter in 21 shelters opened in these areas. The Water Development Board(WDB) is continuing to dump geo-bags to prevent erosion. However, locals claim that if permanent embankments are not constructed soon, the risky structures will quickly disappear into the riverbed.
Local Kalam Khan said the house was flooded. Moreover, the house can be eroded any time. So they are moving to another area.
Nizam Uddin Bepari, chairman of Bandarkhola Union Parishad, said, “Yesterday, a high school in our area was washed away by the river. In addition, Union Parishad Bhaban, primary school, community clinic and other government and non-government establishments are under threat. I think these can be protected if the WDB takes permanent measures to prevent erosion.
Upazilla Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Shibchar Md. Asaduzzaman said the Upazilla administration has been working since the water level started rising in Padma. We have arranged shifting of people to safer shelters. Besides, our District administration and Chief Whip Nur e Alam Chowdhury Liton are in constant touch with the situation.
