Road crash kills 5 in Narshingdi

At least five passengers of a microbus, including two children, were killed and seven others sustained injury in a head -on collision with a truck in Narsingdi Sadar upazila. The accident took place at Panchdona of Madhabadi police station on the Ghorashal-Tongi regional road around 12 midnight on Saturday (June 19). All the victims are from Jirabo area of Ashulia in Dhaka and they are relatives of each other.

The deceased have been identified as Mukti Akhter (30) and her son Sadekul (6), Ruby Akhter (40) and her daughter Rahima (3) and Rokeya Begum (52). Rahima's father Rashid was also injured in the accident. Speaking to police and doctors, Rashid said that Rahima and Mukti were killed on the spot. Sadekul died on the way to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital and Ruby and Rokeya died on the way to Dhaka.

Police said after talking to the injured, there were 14 people including the driver in the microbus. The passengers are relatives of each other. They went to visit the shrine in Sylhet. On the way back from there, they met with the accident at the turning point of Sakura in Panchdona.

The injured are Saifa (12), Israt Jahan (8), Samsunnahar (60), Sharmin (35), Razia (40), Rashid (40) and Kazimuddin (52). They were first taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital. Later, considering the seriousness of the situation, four injured were sent to Dhaka. Ruby Akhtar died on the way. And her relatives tried to take Rokeya Begum to Dhaka from the spot. But she also died on the way to Dhaka, said Zahidul Islam, sub-inspector of Madhabadi police station.

Police said the passengers of the microbus left Ashulia on Saturday morning to visit the shrine in Sylhet. They visited the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) and Hazrat Shahparan (RA). On the way back, the microbus collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction at the Sakura turning in Panchdona. The microbus has been twisted at the impact of collision.

Narsingdi Sadar Hospital Emergency Department doctor on duty Dr. Asaduzzaman said nine people, including child Sadiqul, were brought to the hospital. However, Sadekul died before he was brought to the hospital. Four of the eight injured have been sent to the capital for better treatment.

Narsingdi Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) Enamul Haque said five people were killed in the accident. The truck concerned has been seized. However, the driver escaped. Attempts are being made to arrest him.
