Work is underway to convert another general ward at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) into a Covid ward to cope with corona patient pressure. Oxygen supply line is now under construction in ward 17 of the hospital for corona patients.
The hospital's director, Brigadier General Shamim Yazdani, gave the information at a briefing on the situation in Corona on Saturday (June 19) morning. He said there are 36 beds in ward no.17. There will be an additional 12 beds in the verandah. As a result, a total of 48 patients will be treated there. The Central Oxygen Supply Line in the ward will be completed in a day or two. Only then will corona patients be kept there.
One general ward after another is now being converted into corona wards at RMCH for the treatment of Covid patients. Now corona patients are kept in wards 1, 3, 15, 16, 22, 25, 26, 29-30 and 39-40 of the hospital. There are also 20 Corona dedicated beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 15 in the cabin. The total number of beds is 309. If ward number 17 is added, the total number of beds will be 357.
However, 365 patients were admitted to the hospital on Saturday morning. The hospital Director said that only those patients who are in bed get the benefit of the central oxygen supply line. Patients on the floor or on the verandah are given oxygen through cylinders and oxygen concentrators. The hospital has 183 oxygen concentrators and 725 cylinders.
He added that the first wave of the corona had a maximum of 135 patients at RMC Hospital. Before Eid, it stood at 71 patients. After Eid, it has increased now. So ordinary wards are being converted into corona wards. But due to lack of space, it will not be possible to increase the number of ICU beds in the next 5-6 months, said the hospital Director.
He said the ICU needed additional facilities. which is no longer in the hospital at the moment. Initially 10 ICUs were done for Corona but it has been gradually increased to 20. It will not be possible to increase. Now if the lockdown is done properly, then the number of patients may decrease.
