Former DG Health gets bail

Former Director General of the Health Directorate Prof Dr. Mohammad Abul Kalam was granted bail in the money embezzlement case.

On Thursday (October 7) morning, he surrendered through a lawyer in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge KM Imrul Kayesh and applied for bail.

Following the hearing, the judge granted him interim bail.

Earlier on October 5, he returned back from the court as the judge was busy with other work.

The other five accused in the case are Mohammad Shahed alias Shahed Karim, chairman of Regent Group and Regent Hospital, former Director of health (hospitals and clinics) Dr. Aminul Hasan, Deputy Director (Hospital-1) Dr. Md. Yunus Ali, Assistant Director (Hospital-1) Dr. Md. Shafiur Rahman and research officer. Md. Didarul Islam.

In the chargesheet, in connivance with each other, the regent hospital without license renewal was converted into a dedicated covid hospital, a memorandum of understanding was signed and samples of 3,939 covid patients were provided free of cost in the lab of government institution Nipsom.

From where they have been accused of embezzling a total of 3 crore 34 lakh 8 thousand 500 rupees including taking a total of one crore 36 lakh 6 thousand 500 rupees from the patients as illegal reward.

ACC Deputy Director Farid Ahmed Patwari filed the case on September 23, 2020.
