40% votes casted, says CEC as voting ends

About 12 crore voters across the country had the opportunity to cast their votes in the 12th National Assembly elections. Over 4.8 crore of them have voted, said the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal.

He said that a quick calculation says, more than 40 percent of the voters cast their votes. But this number will increase further.

The Chief Election Commissioner gave this information after the polls end.

He was talking to the reporters at the election building in Agargaon on Sunday (January 7) evening.

CEC said, voters have voted peacefully. There has been fake voting in some centers. But we have taken action against them.

In this year's parliamentary elections, 1 thousand 969 candidates contested in 299 seats. 28 political parties and independent candidates were there.

44 political parties registered by the EC. 16 parties abstained from the polls.

Polling was held in 42 thousand 24 centers across the country. Election Commission canceled the candidature of boat candidate Mostafizur Rahman for violating the code of conduct in Chittagong-16 constituency at the closing period of the polling day.

Besides, two presiding officers died while performing their duties in two districts. One died last night of a heart attack while on duty. EC Secretary Jahangir Alam said another person died of a heart attack in Jamalpur today.
